We have always lived loud, and we’re not going to change that

Gen X refuses to die with dignity. We will die in the spirit of Grace Jones and Poison, thank you, as we express ourselves in any way we see fit, whether that be in a regular suit and tie, or a full body of tattoos.

Most of us are not, as our parents did, dressing our age. We see those articles — the ones that say we’re supposed to stop wearing strappy sandals and high-tops, combat boots and miniskirts, or skin-tight jeans with holes — and we consider them for a second until we say “fuck that.” We’ve always worn…

Chapter 3: Wonderful Watson

The Bug Diary, 2021. Cover illustration by Lana Grove

Watson Library was like something out of my dreams. My good dreams. First of all, it looked like what I imagined a European cathedral looked like, at least on the outside. Inside, it was a cathedral of books. The smell was amazing. Everyone referred to the miles of bookcases as “the stacks,” and the stacks went down underground like a labyrinth. It was cool, and creepy, and kind of disorienting, and easy to get lost.

As we traipsed up the hill and away from the dorm, the cicadas buzzed away at a deafening volume. It was almost eight-thirty and the…

This week The Week magazine’s published fake libertarian Bonnie Kristian’s mealy mouthed opinion piece stating that while the Capitol insurrection on January 6 was bad, it wasn’t really that bad.

To her credit, she doesn’t deny the insurrection happened — she just thinks it shouldn’t be called an “insurrection.” Bonnie thinks “sedition” will do, thank you, and she doesn’t want to see post-9/11 response with lots of new unconstitutional legislation put into place à la the Patriot Act.

Nobody is asking for that, Bonnie. We’re just asking that the perpetrators actually be punished instead of coddled. So far, it’s not…

Sometimes, I can’t believe it myself

I’m a middle-class, middle-aged white woman living in the Midwest. As such, I enjoy certain perks that lots of Americans simply don’t.

Even if I’m wearing jeans and a t-shirt, I can feel pretty confident walking into any public space or business and feel comfortable, even if it’s a “nice” store or venue. I’m not too worried about being followed as a possible shoplifter or having someone asking me rhetorically if they can “help me” in a condescending or hostile tone. I don’t have to worry about being asked to leave.

This goes for white spaces as well as spaces…

There is a faction of white America that is dangerous to this nation, and it’s time for the rest of us white folks to get control of our people. They are the Trumpublicans, which is my dog-whistle for ignorance-loving, evangelical-church-going, fact hating, slavery-apologizing, fetus-worshiping, white Americans. They don’t just love Trump; they love any stupid politician willing to promote their dangerous agenda. They love Sarah Palin and Marjorie Taylor Greene and will gladly circle the wagons around alleged pedophiles like Matt Gaetz and Roy Moore.

Make no mistake: conservatives who left the party or voted for Biden in 2020 are…

Makes the movie funnier than ever

My husband and I recently re-watched the original Vacation for maybe the hundredth time, but this time, it was like I was watching a whole new movie. I used to think of Vacation as a sort of silly, slap-sticky movie with a few funny spots in it, but after surviving the Trump years, every second of Vacation was an indictment of stupidity and consumerism in the US, and of white America, in particular.

Clark Griswold, played by Chevy Chase, is your basic middle-class, middle-aged, Midwestern white schlub who’s managed to kiss the right ass at his cushy job making food…

The Bug Diary is a new adult novel that has everything: sex, drugs, mystery, humor and GHOSTS

When I was but a wee lass in elementary school and adults would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I honestly had no idea. “Maybe you’ll want to be a ballerina,” most adults would say, and I would nod my head, though I knew this was not true. I knew had zero desire to be a ballerina.

What I did know was I loved to read. I sucked at gym and sports, and back in the pre-internet 1970s and 80s, if you weren’t a particularly athletic kid, the only way to pass the time was…

Really — it just doesn’t

Most experts agree COVID-19 likely originated naturally, jumping from animals to humans by way of a typical mutation. There’s plenty of concrete, solid reasons to believe this. For one thing, it happens all the time. Most diseases that plague humans once originated in animals and crossed to humans. As humans have evolved and kept more and more animals nearby for food and companionship, more and more bacteria and viral diseases have had the opportunity to jump from animals to humans, and sometimes even back and forth, as new mutations occur.

For instance, the 2009 outbreak of H1N1, more commonly known…

And where to find them

Let’s face it: One of the great pleasures in life is blazing up and being sucked into a mind-expanding television show. It should be noted that every one of these shows is great all on its own, without herbal enhancement. But many of these shows almost feel as though they were meant to be consumed while high, and watching them while toking the ganja can only take your enjoyment to new soaring new levels.
