Abortion Bans are Uncivil

Taking away people’s rights is the ultimate insult

It’s always funny to me when forced birthers accuse reproductive rights activists of being “uncivil.”

They aren’t just talking about our views on abortion when they say that. Most, but not all, of them are religious extremists. If you dare utter a curse word in their presence they’ll let you know they’re going to be finished debating with you if you don’t stop being “uncivil.” They also think it’s “uncivil” when a woman stands up for herself or demands equal rights.

The irony, of course, is that abortion bans are about as “uncivil” as civilization can get.

Taking away bodily autonomy from half the population because of an outdated religious construct is uncivil. Forcing pregnancy and childbirth on anyone is uncivil, but forcing pregnancy and childbirth on rape and incest victims, and even children is uncivil to an unforgivable degree. It’s not just vile — it should be punishable by law.

Violating born people’s constitutional rights is uncivil. Giving greater rights to embryos and fetuses than women, girls and trans men is uncivil. Granting parental rights to rapists is uncivil. Allowing rapists to choose the mother of “their” children — while rape victims have no say — is uncivil.
