Artificial Wombs Are Not a Cure for Pregnancy or Abortion

And other inaccuracies regarding the abortion debate

For whatever reason, abortion is a medical procedure that inspires people to give their opinions about it, even if they themselves don’t possess the organs required to ever need an abortion. Many, many folks seem to believe their opinion is vital to the debate, even when they have no idea what they’re talking about. It’s frustrating enough to hear the inaccuracies from laypeople, but the media can’t seem to get the facts right, either.

I’ve now read more than a few people, here on Medium and in the national media, write that we should be able to transplant embryos or fetuses from pregnant people into “artificial wombs” so that women wouldn’t have to remain pregnant and forced birthers would be happy. All of the people who have written this opinion happen to be men, and they generally present this idea with an implied ‘TA DA!” breathlessly waiting to be praised for their brilliance.
