From a moral perspective it is a sin to being a child into the world you can’t feed or care for. It’s a sin to bring a child into an abusive relationship. It’s a sin to force a 12-year-old girl to endure 40 weeks of pregnancy and childbirth. Nowhere in the Bible is abortion proclaimed to be a sin. The Jews don’t consider it a sin. Neither do several churches.

Here is the official position by the Lutheran church: “The official position of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America states that “abortion prior to viability [of a fetus] should not be prohibited by law or by lack of public funding” but that abortion after the point of fetal viability should be prohibited except when the life of a mother is threatened or when fetal abnormalities pose a fatal threat to a newborn.”

It’s only very recently that American evangelicals have come to assume abortion is a sin and assume that every Christian views it as such.
