Gen Z, Take Note
Of the racist, sexist responses to Kamala Harris
About the time Gen Z was starting elementary school, a historic thing happened: The United States of America elected its first Black president. For Gen Z kids, growing up with a Black president wasn’t unusual — it was totally normal, and they took it in stride. They had no concept how sociologically significant it was to simply have a Black family residing in the White House, never mind leading the country.
I’ve tried to explain to Gen Zers just how badly it broke the brains of American conservatives when a Black man was elected president, and usually the response is a skeptical look, a nervous laugh and a “Really?” I can tell they don’t quite believe it, or at least, they don’t really “get” the level of ugly discomfort it caused a significant portion of the country — including their own relatives.
Youngsters, take note of what’s going to happen to Kamala Harris in the next two months. Conservatives will insist she can’t be elected president because her mother was born in India and her father was born in Jamaica.
They’ll try to insist that she’s stupid, ineffectual and won’t be able to deal with other world leaders because of her gender. They’ll call her emotional. They’re already criticizing her voice and her laugh.
