I Love the Olympics
Does that make me an old-fashioned dork? Me and Leslie Jones, I guess
WARNING. I USE THE WORD ‘LOVE’ SO MANY TIMES IN THIS PIECE IT COULD BE A DRINKING GAME.
A few years ago my husband and I made the decision to dump cable and subscribe to a few streaming services instead. We were tired of paying so much money every month to watch about 20 channels out of 450. Two years ago, for the summer Olympics, my husband purchased the upgrade for Hulu for a month so we could watch the games. This year, we discussed for all of about 30 seconds whether or not we wanted to do the same for the 2022 Beijing Olympics. We both love the Olympics, Summer or Winter. When we were kids, every four years our families would gather around the television to watch the best amateur athletes in the world perform amazing feats against all odds. It was a simpler time and the Olympics were special, like the way The Wizard of Oz was aired every spring.
When I was a kid — a white girl raised by conservative people in the midwest suburbs — the Olympics seemed almost magic. When you’re raised to believe you live in the best country in the world, and that the sun shines brighter here and God loves us the best — the Olympics become next-level exciting.
