Frequently I am struck by the wildly opposing realities currently at war in our culture: We’re all walking around with supercomputers in our pockets that can instantly offer up information on the latest scientific knowledge — and also part of the country wants to return to banning books in schools.

We have these super cool new solar torches in our backyard. They soak up the sun all day and burn all night long, and they even look like real fire! It’s amazing! And also my daughter is going to lose her Constitutional right to an abortion in our state. I wish we could afford to move, because honestly, I don’t want to pay taxes in a state that thinks my daughter and I are second class citizens.

I can stream nearly any show or movie I want in the comfort of my own home, anytime I want — at the same time, many people in my country think history teachers should be forced by the government to lie to their students.

One of my daughter’s friends has been going through a successful transition from male to female, and she’s happier than ever. She has become a kind, funny, lovely young woman. Also, one of our state senators, Roger Marshall, wants the government television rating system to add warnings to kids’ programming that even acknowledges the existence of LGBTQ+ people…
