My Obligatory Post Complaining About Medium

I never thought I’d do this, but here we go

I’ve been a paying member of Medium ever since I joined in 2017. There were so many things to love about it! It’s easy to use. The formatting is simple, but looks good. It’s also the first blogging platform I ever made a dime on. To be clear, I don’t make a lot of cash by blogging on Medium, but that’s fine. It’s better than a poke in the eye, as I am fond of saying.

I have experienced countless up and downs with Medium. I’ve had great highs with a couple of viral posts, and periods of time when my posts didn’t get boosted for a long time. But I never wanted to complain, because I was grateful for the platform itself and the opportunity to participate in it.

I’ve been through countless Medium algorithm changes, staff changes, buyouts, and watched my earnings fluctuate from $30 per month to over $200 per month. Meanwhile, my followers continue to go up, which is nice.

But there are some things I do not understand about Medium. Admittedly, I was an English major and not a business major, but it seems to me there are some things that should be no-brainers. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

I’m glad they changed the rule so that to make money, you have to be a monthly subscriber. It never made…
