News broke this week that a professor who refused to use a transgender student’s preferred pronoun will settle with the university he works for, for a whopping $400 thousand. After the student complained to the university, the university opened an investigation and reprimanded the professor, who subsequently sued the university for the reprimand. The university opted to settle.

The professor’s claim is that had he been forced to refer to a transwoman student as “she,” it would have violated his religious and free speech rights:

“I believe that God created men and women, male and female. But also the idea that my speech could be coerced, could be compelled by the administration … The college classroom is to be a place of debate and discussion and freewheeling ideas. The university has no place in telling professors how they are to think with the students.
