Not sure why this whole section of your piece is nearly at the end, when it's the crux of your argument. Ultimately, it doesn't matter why men respond better to "I have a boyfriend" than "No." The point is it works. Maybe if some big, hulking guy was following you around all night trying to get in your pants you wouldn't care why "I have a boyfriend" works, you'd just be grateful.
