Somebody Somewhere is a new dramady on HBO starring stand-up comic and cabaret singer Bridget Everett, who happens to hail from my home state, Kansas.

In fact, Bridget is my age, and her home town of Manhattan (Kansans call it the Little Apple) is only an hour-and-a-half from my hometown of Lawrence. Both are college towns, which make them slightly more liberal than other parts of the state, but still — it’s Kansas. Kansas is a place where the urban and rural often live right next door to each other, and the show features plenty of shots of crops, barns and farm equipment next to cafes and office buildings.

Everett accurately captures what life in Kansas is like for those of us who aren’t conservative farmers. Everett plays the character Sam in an approximation of her own life. Sam moved back to her hometown to take care of her dying sister, and now that her sister is gone, Sam is struggling to find her place in her old hometown.
