In the age of trump, more Americans are reporting feeling anxious, specifically because of the president. Fifty-nine percent of us report trump is causing us mental distress, and many of us are stress-eating, drinking more, and taking more drugs in order to cope. We are more cynical, more depressed, more paranoid, more angry. I’ve seen anti-trump people online snap at each other, only to find out they’re on the same side, then apologize for their short tempers.
In other words, we’re becoming more like them. More like trump supporters. And the really sick part is, they love it. They love to watch us squirm.
We’re jumpy. We’re grumpy. We feel helpless. We’re watching an actual criminal steal from all of us, destroy our country’s relationship with our allies, while children are separated from parents and thrown into cages. Of COURSE we, the sane Americans, are all on edge.
We are more cynical, more depressed, more paranoid, more angry.
Because trump supporters are letting the rest of us know that now we feel the way they did while Obama was in office. Obama. The man who is clearly not a narcissistic sociopath. The man who is kind, loves his family and his country.
So what the fuck does that say about the people who still support trump? The ones who not only still support him, but love him? Whatever it indicates is terrifying. This bizarre new reality trump and his supporters are all trying to foist on us is deliberately disorienting and upsetting to those of us who like living in the place known as reality. Alternative facts, constant lies, denouncing the media, announcing up is down and down is up and watching trump supporters agree and lap it all up like mana from heaven is just too big of a mind fuck for most of us to take.
It’s not just that trump is dividing us. Clearly Obama divided us, unintentionally. A significant portion of white America is aggrieved at the disruption of white male power and considers the rest of us to have betrayed them, and this country. They don’t give a damn about freedom, or the Constitution or even the law. Nope. To them, the concept of America is the land where white people rule, and if you rule hard enough, you can crush everyone around you, and that’s to be celebrated. No, what trump has done has opened our eyes to the hearts of the people we live, work, and even go to church with. And that revelation isn’t comforting.
One thing this presidency has taught me, for better or worse, is to not trust my fellow Americans. See, I used to believe that the vast majority of white evangelicals believed what the preached. But they have demonstrated it’s all a big lie. All of it. They don’t follow the teachings of Jesus. They don’t care about the rule of law. They certainly don’t have any moral compass, whatsoever. Perhaps most fascinating, they don’t care about the very foundation of what makes America, America.
I get there are a few conservatives left out there who do practice what they preach, but how are we supposed to know who’s sincere and who’s full of shit?
So, thanks, trump and trump folks, I guess, for demonstrating you’re willing to destroy this country for your own bizarre cult. Because I, and millions of others, will spend the rest of our lives making sure you don’t ever get to run this country again. And I will never again give you, or the institutions you align yourselves with, the benefit of the doubt.
