Recently, I had occasion to be in Chicago for the American Library Association Conference. I traveled there with a group of authors, and when we weren’t at the conference, we of course had to take in the sights and tastes of Chicago, because it is a fabulous town.

One afternoon, an author friend and I took a shuttle to downtown and wandered for the day. I’ve been to Chicago a few times, but always only for a weekend, so I don’t know it well.

After having lunch at Harry Carrey’s, we walked the streets, marveling at the architecture, stepping into shops, and exploring the Chicago River Walk. Eventually, we wandered into a plaza in the middle of everything where we eavesdropped on a tour guide giving the histories of the various surrounding buildings.

But suddenly, one building caught my eye, and the tour guide wasn’t, and hadn’t talked about it, at least in front of us. My curiosity was piqued.

I’ve seen European cathedrals — intricately artistic monuments to The Almighty that undoubtedly took thousands of hours of thousands of lives to erect, but nothing like this. This appeared to be a church-skyscraper. A Sky-church-scraper? I’d never seen…
