Why Don’t Evangelicals Care About Gun Violence?
Because men rule while women and children suffer
--
One would think that people who wring their hands over abortion would be particularly upset about actual living, breathing children who are blown in away in schools by maniacs with guns. But they aren’t, particularly. They are A-OK with offering “thoughts and prayers” and not much else, because Evangelical Jesus is pro-gun, evangelical men like unrestricted access to guns (they might have to fight the Godless communists after all), and men have the final say in all matters. Therefore, it’s unfortunate that children have to suffer for men’s missteps when they lose their shit and mow down twenty or so school kids. The important thing is that man was able to exercise his God-given second-Amendment rights.
Abortion bothers fundamentalists because it gives women and girls agency over their own bodies, and that cannot happen within patriarchal organizations. Besides, women are supposed to suffer according to these churches, and women are specifically supposed to suffer in childbirth, all because of Eve’s sin. To the Evangelical mind, it’s okay if a teenage girl has to leave high school to raise her baby out of wedlock, because her future isn’t important, anyway, and her body was put on earth to make babies. It’s completely fine if little girls who are raped have to go through childbirth, because they were born female and their bodies don’t belong to them, anyway. It doesn’t matter that a poor, working woman can’t access abortion. Fundamentalists believe she shouldn’t have opened her legs in the first place, and if she’s going to open her legs, it better be to a man that can support her and her child. If she can’t do that, well then, it’s only natural she and her child — the seed of her sin — suffer in poverty. The other option acceptable to evangelicals? The woman giving away her baby to another family (preferably religious) with the means to care for a child. It doesn’t matter if the child suffers wondering why they were given away, and it doesn’t matter if the woman suffers for being forced to give a child away. They are suffering for her sin, and that is their lot in life.
It’s the same reasoning that fosters the massive problem of pedophila and sexual assault within the fundamental religious community. It’s not…
