Chaos erupted in the “prolife” community this week when it was announced that reality television show star and outspoken proponent of forced birth, Jessa Duggar Seewald of 19 Kids and Counting fame, revealed she had a D&C over the holidays to remove a problem pregnancy.

There seems to be confusion over whether or not the fetus had actually died — forced birthers insist Jessa has reported there was no heartbeat, but news stories have so far only reported that the ultrasound technician said: ‘The sac looks good. The baby does not.’

Whether or not the fetus had a heartbeat is irrelevant. What’s important is the fetus had some sort of fatal anomaly and would not have survived outside the uterus. In either case, the pregnant person has a right to appropriate treatment, which is removal of the pregnancy, if they so wish.

Somehow Jessa was able to be immediately admitted for a dilation and curettage procedure (more commonly known as D&C or D&E) to remove the pregnancy, despite the fact she hails from Arkansas, which has a total ban on abortion.
