Young women don't go into the humanities and social work thinking it'll make them rich. That's how men think. Men are allowed to concentrate on almost solely on themselves, while women are still socialized to care for others. Young women go into social work because they understand the work is vital. If all the unpaid/underpaid social work women do went away tomorrow, society would fall apart. The women of Iceland demonstrated this quite thoroughly in one single day by refusing to do anything, something I wish women would do here in the States. Thankfully, I'm seeing more and more young men becoming enlightened and going into social work. Hopefully this will raise respect and salaries for these jobs.
